Ekato develops and optimises operationally safe mechanical seals for reactors that are operated at temperatures down to -100 °C. Their structural design, materials, elastomers, lubricants and supply units have been specifically designed for these extreme condi-tions. This is achieved by means of finite element analysis, which delivers the temperature profile within the individual compo-nents at the given operating and environmental conditions. After an experimental validation of the numerical model, reliable parameter studies can be carried out for the different operating and boundary conditions. Special attention is paid not only to the seal rings but also to the buffer fluids. They must satisfy the required properties with respect to lubrication and heat transfer at these low temperatures, and they must be compatible with the process media. The mechan-ical seals that have been developed and optimised in this way are tested at the test stand under real operating conditions.
