BASF’s Additive Manufacturing Center (AMC) combines state-of-the-art plant technology and specialist expertise to answer user questions on all issues concerning additive manufacturing of metal components. The Center’s experts work with powder-based technologies for Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), the two most important AM methods being employed in industry. The AMC at BASF has advanced technology systems covering an area of 800 m2 for the production of process-engineering parts. Processes here meet the highest quality standards for the production of these components in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. BASF’s experts have been qualifying metal components using in-house additive manufacturing machines since 2015. In 2019, BASF became the first company to carry out a certification process according to the Pressure Equipment Directive, including procedure qualification testing, for a pressure-equipment component made using a 3D printer.
