Most hydrogenation reactions are limited by either the heat transfer and/or the mass transfer. Solving these two problems is relatively easy at small or medium scale. At large scale, e.g. reactors from 10 to 50 m³, the duty is very difficult to achieve. Biazzi manages such situations and gives even full scale-up guarantees for large reactors. The Biazzi reactor includes two essential components, the agitator and the heat exchanger. The agitator drive has a dry magnetic coupling up to 110 kW. The reacting gas is recycled and distributed throughout the reactor in great excess. Even in very large reactors, the agitator guarantees an optimal distribution of the gas and an over-saturation throughout the reactor. The heat exchanger system consists of vertical heat exchange plates. As a result, the gas/liquid/solid mixture is distributed from the inside to the outside without meeting any resistance. The complex mechanical questions are perfectly solved. One of the most important factors in the success of the reactor is the straightforward scale-up of plants. This is well understood so that it is possible to carry out all development work in a one litre laboratory reactor. The results achieved (yield, product quality, catalyst consumption, etc.) are guaranteed exactly the same for the large reactor.
