In the thin film dryer from Buss-SMS-Canzler, liquid, pasty or solid material is continuously applied by a rotor to the cylindrical heating jacket in a thin layer and dried. Advantages are the low hold-up, the effective heat transfer and the indirect drying. Thus, even difficult drying tasks with problematical substances can be accomplished under vacuum. New applications are constantly being tested and implemented in industrial plants. An example is the production of the monomer
2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (trade name AMPS). It is made from acrylonitrile, isobutene, fuming sulfuric acid and water. After the reaction, unreacted toxic, environmentally hazardous and caustic acrylonitrile is separated. The monomer is then a white powder. Thin film dryers from Buss-SMS-Canzler are available in horizontal and vertical versions.
