Building better and efficient spray dryers

GEA Niro’s Drynetics is a technique that allows researchers to watch the changing structure of a single particle as it dries and also extract a mathematical description of its drying kinetics for use in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. This innovation refines the CFD process to more accurately predict what will happen inside the drying chamber and so help develop better, more efficient spray dryers.

There are now many examples of how GEA Niro has used this to provide significant benefits to its customers. Reduced chamber size – a significant cost driver in a spray drying plant – is one benefit that has been obtained. For one customer, simulations made it clear that a 20 % smaller dryer could produce the same output as the larger dryer used previously. This smaller dryer al-lowed the company to reduce building and installation costs as it required a smaller footprint and a lower building height; it also reduced the environmental impact of the whole plant through significantly lower energy consumption
